Legacy giving | A gift in will

Considering Charitable Gifting?

What is a gift in a Will?

A gift in a Will (also known as a legacy) is a way to leave your money, possessions, or a share of your estate, to a person or organisation after you pass away.

Types of gifts you might leave to The Teesside Charity in your Will

  • A percentage or share of your estate
  • A lump sum (single payment of money)
  • Valuable items

Why are gifts in Wills important to The Teesside Charity?

A gift in your Will helps us continue providing vital financial support to charities, community groups, schools and initiatives across the Tees Valley, particularly those supporting people facing disadvantage.

Gifts in Wills and Inheritance Tax

Gifts to UK registered charities are generally exempt from inheritance tax. If you leave 10% or more of your net estate to charity, the inheritance tax rate on the remainder of your estate may be reduced from 40% to 36%.

These rules depend on your individual circumstances. For general information, please see HM Revenue & Customs guidance on inheritance tax and charitable giving: https://www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax.

We are unable to provide tax or legal advice, so we recommend speaking with a solicitor or professional adviser. If helpful, we would be pleased to introduce you to local solicitors who support our work in the Tees Valley area.
